The Atlanta Poker Club $999 Grand Championship was held on Saturday, April 20th at AllStar Billiards in Winder. There were 272 players qualified for the tournament that is the highlight of an entire APC season. The prizes were $700 WSOP/WPT Package + Invite to Yearly Championship (priceless) + 6 Month V.I.P. Membership $99 + Rectangular APC Silver Coin
2nd Place Won $150 + APC Gear
3rd Place Won $50 + APC Gear
4th – 10th Place Won APC Gear
Rachel Nowell emerged victorious and beat a field of 138 players!
Rachel was born in Atlanta. She is married to Gil Nowell and they have three children. Gil is an APC player and a Tournament Director.
Who is your favorite poker player, and why?
Daniel Negreanu…he can change up his game when need be.
Who has influenced your play the most?
Gil Nowell…we talk about strategy and he’s more into the math of the game…pot odds and strategy. I play more with a gut feeling. He’s helped me with that part of my game.
What is your advice for new players?
To have experience before you come to play. Experience whether reading a book or playing online and if you sit down with no clue, you will get discouraged and won’t last long. Just come with some knowledge and it is easier for you.
How long have you played with the APC?
Almost 7 years. Gil and I went to Biloxi on our honeymoon. Then I watched Texas Hold’em on TV. The appeal of the game was so much better as it used to be 40 old men playing. Then I learned that it isn’t just about playing your cards, it’s about playing the other person…mind games. I’m very competitive so it appealed to me.
What are your goals in the APC?
To just keep working on my game and be a better player and when we go to Las Vegas and Biloxi hold my own and cash. Maybe one of the women from the APC will win the $10,000 World Series Of Poker.
How did it feel to win the Grand Championship?
It was very surreal. It still doesn’t seem real. I’ve played for so long that it was about time!
