Sammy Wall has been playing with the Atlanta Poker Club since September 2012. Sammy is a widower with four children and seven grandchildren. He has lived in Winder for 69 years.
How long have you played Texas Hold’em?
I started in 2009 online with Zynga poker. The only club I’ve played with is the Atlanta Poker Club.
What is your secret to winning the most games in a season?
I don’t know. I guess I was just lucky.
How have you changed your game since you started playing?
It has changed a good bit. I watched the other players at the tournaments and their patterns. I improved my betting and my playing of position. I’ve had a lot of help from the people I’ve played with who have played a long time.
Was your goal when you started the season to have the most wins and points?
That didn’t even occur to me until midway through the season. I realized I was doing good, and I thought I might be lucky enough to make a run for the overall. I started to play seven to nine times a week to accrue more points and it worked out.
As you accumulated more wins and amassed more points, was it easier or harder to win?
It was harder. I guess I played too tight and didn’t play my normal game or make calls that I would have if I wasn’t running for the points.
Who is your favorite pro?
Daniel Negreanu. I like to watch his play and his personality. The way he meets the crowds and the other players.
Have you ever lost your temper at the table?
No. If I lose my temper at the poker table I’ll never go back.
Any advice for new players?
Enjoy the game. That is what I did at the beginning and what I do now.
What are the most important elements of playing at the APC for you?
The professionalism of the Tournament Directors and the way the venues are run. Actually, the whole APC and the staff.
It has been an enjoyable two years and I hope to play a few more.
